Being aware of one's own emotions - recognizing and acknowledging feelings as they happen - is at the very heart of Emotional Intelligence. And this awareness encompasses not only moods but also thoughts about those moods. People who are able to monitor their feelings as they arise are less likely to be ruled by them and are thus better able to manage their emotions. Managing emotions does not mean suppressing them; nor does it mean giving free rein to every feeling. Psychologist Daniel Goleman, one of several authors who have popularized the notion of Emotional Intelligence, insisted that the goal is balance and that every feeling has value and significance. As Goleman said, "A life without passion would be a dull wasteland of neutrality, cut off and isolated from the richness of life itself." Thus, we manage our emotions by expressing them in an appropriate manner. Emotions can also be managed by engaging in activities that cheer us up, soothe our hurts, or reassure us when we feel anxious. Clearly, awareness and management of emotions are not independent. For instance, you might think that individuals who seem to experience their feelings more intensely than others would be less able to manage them. However, a critical component of awareness of emotions is the ability to assign meaning to them - to know why we are experiencing a particular feeling or mood. Psychologists have found that, among individuals who experience intense emotions, individual differences in the ability to assign meaning to those feelings predict differences in the ability to manage them. In other words, if two individuals are intensely angry, the one who is better able to understand why he or she is angry will also be better able to manage the anger. Self-motivation refers to strong emotional self-control, which enables a person to get moving and pursue worthy goals, persist at tasks even when frustrated, and resist the temptation to act on impulse. Resisting impulsive behavior is, according to Goleman, "the root of all emotional self-control." 5 | Page Nguyễn Đình Luyện GV trường THCS Bù Nho – Phú Riềng – Bình Phước
  6. Of all the attributes of Emotional Intelligence, the ability to postpone immediate gratification and to persist in working toward some greater future gain is most closely related to success - whether one is trying to build a business, get a college degree, or even stay on a diet. One researcher examined whether this trait can predict a child's success in school. The study showed that 4-year-old children who can delay instant gratification in order to advance toward some future goal will be "far superior as students" when they graduate from high school than will 4-year-olds who are not able to resist the impulse to satisfy their immediate wishes. 96. Which of the following can we infer from paragraph 1? A. Some people can understand their feelings better than others. B. If people pay attention to their feelings, they can control their emotions better. C. People who can manage their emotions will be controlled by them. D. If people pay attention to their feelings, they will not be able to manage them. 97. The word "soothe" in paragraph 2 could be best replaced by __________. A. reduceB. relieveC. weaken D. worsen 98. A. explain their emotions to othersB. stop feeling angry C. manage their emotions appropriatelyD. experience feelings more intensively 99. From paragraph 2, we can see that Daniel Goleman ___________. A. wrote about Emotional Intelligence B. trained people to increase their Emotional Intelligence C. treated patients who had emotional problems D. studied how people manage their emotions 100. All of the following are mentioned in paragraph 2 about our emotions EXCEPT __________. A. every feeling is importantB. we can manage our emotions C. we should ignore some feelingsD. emotions are part of a satisfying life 101. The word "pursue" in paragraph 4 mostly means ___________. A. find out about somethingB. try to achieve something C. be involved in somethingD. improve or develop something 105. 7. sea-life research in a specially protected area around an island in the Indian Ocean for a month during the summer. The place was known for its beauty but the work was challenging. However, part of it involved going diving daily so though Tessa’s parents had to pay a lot for her flight there, it still wasn’t as much as a week’s holiday in any diving resort. To join, a diving certificate was essential, and although Tessa already had one, she hadn't done any diving for a while, so had to spend time in the water before her adventure. The project she joined was solving a real problem. The level of ocean coral - a hard pink or white structure made up of millions of tiny sea creatures - had reduced by up to 90%, following unusual weather in previous years, possibly caused by global warming. The project’s divers had to discover how many different coral types were present in the sea and how healthy they looked. This information was sent to international scientists to help them learn about the effects of rising temperatures on these creatures. Tessa’s home for the month was an old camp now used by the project's professional staff, and people who, like Tessa, were working there as students rather than employees. Tessa and other group members quickly learnt the camp routine, which, in addition to tasks like putting information onto the computer and checking the boats, included housework. Several people tried to avoid this, complaining that they were just there to help with research, but the organizers soon explained what was expected. There was also studying to do, with everyone needing to prove they could identify different corals before being allowed out to sea without a staff-member. It wasn’t all work though: Tessa’s group explored parts of the jungle with experts, and made visits to a nearby school where they were taught more about the island by the children themselves. Trips further out were limited to weekends, and although Tessa and her friend occasionally hired cars to enjoy the island’s beaches, they generally caught crowded local buses into the island’s capital, as there was little time to do more. A lot of work was needed to keep the camp running and everyone supplied with meals. They had very simple ingredients, and preparation wasn’t helped by having a basic kitchen. For Tessa, however, the whole experience was incredible. She learnt that she could do more than she thought possible, and made many new friends. 106. Tessa found out about the ocean wildlife project from her biology teacher at school. _____ 107. Tessa’s trip cost considerably more than a holiday in a diving resort. _____ 108. Tessa had to collect information that would help researchers studying climate change. _____ 109. The place where Tessa stayed was specially built for people working on the project. _____ 110. Some group members were unhappy about certain activities that they were asked to do. _____ 111. Group members were tested on their knowledge before they could collect information for the scientists. _____ 112. Tessa’s group were pleased to spend some of their time teaching local schoolchildren. _____ 113. Tessa’s group visited other parts of the island by car and bus. _____ 114. Tessa took advantage of the many opportunities to relax on the beach at weekends. _____ 115. Tessa found it difficult to deal with the limited range of food available at the camp. _____ SECTION IV.
