- Part 2: Questions 96 – 105. (2 points – 0.2/each) Read the text and fill in one word which best fits each gap. A useful definition of an air pollutant is a compound added directly or indirectly by humans to the atmosphere in such quantities as to affect humans, animals, vegetation, or materials adversely. Air pollution requires a very flexible definition that permits continuous change. When the first air pollution laws were established in England in the fourteenth century, air pollutants were limited to compounds that could be seen or smelled – a far cry from the extensive list of harmful substances now today. As technology has developed and knowledge of the health aspects of various chemicals has increased, the list of air pollutants has lengthened. In the future, even water vapor might be considered an air pollutant under certain conditions. Many of the more important air pollutants, such as sulfur oxides, carbon monoxide, and nitrogen oxides, are found in mature. As the Earth developed, the concentrations of these pollutants were altered by various chemical reactions; they became components in biogeochemical cycles. These serve as an air purification scheme by allowing the compounds to move from the air to the water or soil. On a global basic, nature’s output of these compounds dwarfs that resulting from human activities. However, human production usually occurs in a localized area, such as a city. In this localized region, human output may be dominant and may temporarily overload the natural purification scheme of the cycles. The result is an increased concentration of noxious chemicals in the air. The concentrations at which the adverse effects appear will be greater than the concentration need not be large for a substance to be a pollutant; in fact the numerical value tells us little until we know how much of an increase this represents over the concentration that would occur naturally in the area. For example, sulfur dioxide has detectable health effects at 0.08 parts per million (ppm), which is about 400 times its natural level. Carbon monoxide, however, has a natural level of 0.1 ppm and is not usually a pollutant until its level reaches about 15 ppm. 96. What does the passage mainly discuss? A. What constitutes an air pollutant. B. The effects of compounds added to the atmosphere. C. The economic impact of air pollution D. How much harm air pollutants can cause. 77. The word “adversely” in the first paragraph is closest meaning to A. quicklyB. admittedly C. negativelyD. considerably 98. It can be inferred from the first paragraph is closest meaning to A. water vapor is an air pollutant in localized areas B. the definition of air pollution will continue to change C. most air pollutants today can be seen or smelled D. a substance becomes an air pollutant only in cities 99. The word “altered” in the first paragraph is closest meaning to A. causedB. slowed C. changedD. eliminated 100. Natural pollutants can play an important role in controlling air pollution for which of the following reason? A. They occur in greater quantities than other pollutants. B. They are less harmful to living beings than are other pollutants. C. They have existed since the Earth developed. D. They function as part of a purification process. 101. According to the passage, which of the following is true about human generated air pollution in localized regions? A. It can be dwarfed by nature’s output of pollutants in the localized region. B. It can overwhelm the natural system that removes pollutants. C. It will damage areas outside of the localized regions. 6 | P a g e
- D. It will react harmfully with naturally occurring pollutants. 102. The word “noxious” in the third paragraph is closest meaning to A. noticeableB. extensive C. harmfulD. weak 103. According to the passage, the numerical value of the concentration level of a substance is only useful if___________. A. the naturally occurring level is also known B. it can be calculated quickly C. the other substances in the area are known D. it is in a localized area 104. The word “detectable” in the third paragraph is closest meaning to A. specialB. beneficialC. separable D. measureable 105. Which of the following is best supported by the passage? A. To effectively control pollution, local government should regularly review their air pollution laws. B. Human activities have been effective in reducing air pollution. C. One of the most important steps in preserving natural lands is to better enforce air pollution laws. D. Scientists should be consulted in order to establish uniform limits for all air pollutants. Part 3. Questions 106 – 115 Read the text below to decide if each statement is TRUE (T) or FALSE (F). Football stars at school Can you imagine being a famous football star but still attending school every Monday morning as usual? That’s what some students at Ashton-on-Mersey School in England do! The school is about 7 km from Old Trafford, the famous sports stadium that is home to Manchester United Football Club. The club takes talented teenagers from all over the world. These young players come to the club to train. Even though teenage players are following their dreams of being sports stars, football clubs recognize that education should still be an important part of their lives. After all, only a small number of young players will go on to have successful professional careers in the sport, because only the best ones go on to join the main team. And although footballers can play professionally from the age of 16, most don’t join professional teams until they are older. All football clubs have to make sure players under 18 are getting an education, but many choose to do this by organizing classes at the club. At Manchester United, however, young players go to a normal school where they can enjoy at least some parts of typical teenage life. That’s why at Ashton-on-Mersey School you can see people who played against Arsenal or Liverpool on Saturday sitting down to classes with all the other students on Monday morning. The Manchester United students have classes two days a week and study a range of different subjects. The rest of the week, they are busy training and preparing for games. But they still follow the rules like all the other students in the school. They are encouraged to feel part of the school, and they are also expected to set a good example to younger students. There are many benefits to the school from their arrangement with Manchester United. The football club has given money to the school, which has helped it to provide a better education for all its students. Perhaps more importantly, seeing successful young players in the school can encourage younger students to try hard to do well and achieve their own dreams. There are also unexpected benefits sometimes, too. Successful players often return to visit the school to give talks to students. When one French speaking player came back to visit, he was invited to join a French class for the day, and students were all keen to ask him questions! Chatting to an international football star really helped the students improve their language skills! 106. Ashton-on-Mersey School is very close to Manchester United’s football ground. 107. Young players join Manchester United from many different countries. 108. Some young players start playing for the main team when they are 16 years old. 7 | P a g e
